FAQ
What is Word Whimsy?
Word Whimsy is a global writer’s group that is active online as well as off. Based in Ocala, Florida we hold meetings once a month locally.
Is Word Whimsy a critique group?
Word Whimsy is more about putting hand to paper and keeping it there though we do critique each other’s work when asked. It is more about encouragement, making your writing a practice, and about pushing past your fears and hesitations. Anyone can write, you just need to allow yourself to make mistakes and keep writing until you write well.
Word Whimsy online will be a writer’s resource intended to inspire creativity and help writers of all experience levels overcome obstacles in their creative process. Designed to be an online ‘muse’ of sorts, Word Whimsy will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and look at things from a new perspective. As the name suggests, Word Whimsy is about enjoying the act and art of writing, getting it out on paper (which is the most important thing) and writing without stifling your creativity by taking it all too seriously! As an added resource, there is a Word Whimsy email list and forums area as well!
What does Word Whimsy do and where?
Word Whimsy holds monthly writer’s meetings in the city of Ocala, Florida. Our meetings are open to anyone who wants to challenge and improve their creative writing skills. Short stories, poetry – epic to haiku, novellas to novels, any type of fiction. We are looking at outside activities like writing related field trips and writer’s conventions for the future as well.
January saw the start of our push to publish! An·thol·o·gy is a collection of short stories written by Word Whimsy members. We are not limiting it to just short stories though. Haiku, poetry, art, and photography will also be included to compliment our story selections. An·thol·o·gy is open to active Word Whimsy members who participate, online and/or locally. All submissions are subject to review and then by the group for the overall flow of the project. We plan to look for an agent in the coming weeks, versus just self-publishing it, so our goal is for An·thol·o·gy to be a professionally published book. If you would like more information, feel free to drop us an email or join our email list and get involved.
Does Word Whimsy support writing challenges outside of the group?
If you participate in NaNoWriMo or Script Frenzy during the year, it isn’t just a memory. If you are continuing your writing projects, whether you plan to publish or not, you have us to lean on if you need proofreaders, sounding boards, or just want someone to read it out loud so you can hear how it flows. Drop a note to the email list and we’ll help!
Are children allowed at the Word Whimsy meeting?
Children 10 and over are welcome as long as they are supervised and not disruptive. We are not responsible for your children, you are.
Who owns the copyright for the stories I submit?
All intellectual rights to the original contributions are protected under copyright. All rights belong to their respective authors under a non-commercial use Creative Commons license. Word Whimsy will do its best to help safeguard the work of its members.
